Through My Eyes by Ruby Brides is a detailed and inspirational memoir about her life from the beginning. Her memoir mainly focuses on her experience of being this 6 year old black little girl who entering a school in the 1960's during segregation when black and white children were not allowed to be in the same school together, and having a lot of people who were white not wanting her there.

| Federal Marshalls walking Ruby Bridges out of school. |
In 1960, Ruby Bridges experienced the hateful and harsh thing called racisim at the age of 6 years old. Her story is such an inspirational story, it shows how brave she was, and how much courage she had to walk into a school that she deserved to go, despite how much anger it was causing to people who did not know any better. Ruby accomplished such a great accomplishment for African American people and made history letting people now that with courage and determination you can overcome anything. Throughout this book it shows the actual events that took place in the life of Ruby Bridges, from the Federal Marshalls having to escort her to school everyday, to people holding signs for and against Ruby attending school, to the KKK burning crosses. Despite all of this happening around her, Ruby had one great teacher, Mrs. Henry who was there through everything to teach her what she deserved to be taught.
Memoirs are interpertive accounts in which facts and events in the life of the author are selected, arranged, and constructed in order to bring out a particular theme or personality trait. (Galda,Cullinan, &Sipe, 2010) This book not only tell of the actual events that took place in Ruby Bridges life, but it also gives a timeline of events that happened during the Civil Rights Movement, in which Ruby Bridges played a key role in as well. I think the theme that is addressed in this memoir by Ruby Bridges is courage. Ruby Bridges was such a courageou little girl in a time that was filled with so much hatred.
